Steve's story

Steven Parry, 60 from Manchester, has been a long-term pressure sore sufferer since July 2015.
“My first sore was on my sacrum coccyx bone. I acquired this purely due to neglect but the impact on my life was nothing short of horrendous.
My coccyx sore, which is still present to this day, went from a grade 1 to a grade 4 within a couple of weeks. I was having it treated at my local medical centre in Swindon but it quickly escalated to osteomyelitis and sepsis. I spent three months in hospital and underwent surgery to remove my tail bone due to the osteomyelitis (i.e. an infection in the bone) caused by the wound.
When I was discharged, I was house and bed bound for nearly two years, having district nurses come in every day for the first year. I ended up with pressure sores on both hips whilst on a hospital bed at home.
I felt useless, I had no life and at times had suicidal thoughts. Before I learnt about Amicapsil I exhausted the treatment options available through the NHS – I tried everything; Seaweed dressing, long-term antibiotics, Silvercel, laval treatment, PICO, VAC, iodine – nothing worked – I was still repeatedly in and out of hospital with sepsis.
“Amicapsil has given me my life back and I’m able to do things I wouldn’t have believed possible a few years ago.”
I discovered Amicapsil in 2017/18. I read about it through the SIA and mentioned it to my tissue viability nurse. She was as keen as me, but nothing ever came of it. In 2023 I decided to purchase the Amicapsil privately through Willingsford. It has been a life changer for me. Although my wounds haven’t completely healed, as they developed osteomyelitis, they are now very small and under control. Since using (and continuing to use) Amicapsil I haven’t had to go to hospital. I’ve had no more surgeries and no more long-term antibiotics.
Amicapsil has given me my life back and I’m able to do things I wouldn’t have believed possible a few years ago. I go to the gym, I go out partying, socialising with my family and friends.
I understand not all treatments work the same for everyone however Amicapsil has completely given me my independence back and totally changed my life for the better. In my opinion it should be made easily available through our GPs on prescription for anyone who wishes to use it.”
