Burns
A burn can be caused by heat, cold, radiation and chemicals. The severity of the burn is affected by the size of the burn area and the depth of the burn.
Burns are generally divided into partial-thickness burn, meaning it only affects the epidermis or dermis; or it can be full-thickness, meaning it has gone through dermis and into deeper layers, typically muscle. A blister is partial-thickness.
Burns can be difficult to heal due to the extensive tissue damage they can cause and they are prone to infection because the normal microbial population that helps to protect our skin is damaged as well.
Amicapsil is effective in treating burn infections, supporting tissue regeneration to replace damaged tissue and in achieving full closure. Data also indicate that scarring following the burn generally is of high quality.
Burns are mostly treated with antimicrobials, i.e. antibiotics and antiseptics, due to their high risk of becoming infected. However, antibiotics and antiseptics are not effective in treating wound infections, antiseptics are toxic to newly formed tissue and immune cells, and both are limited by antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Effective treatment of burns have therefore remained an unmet clinical need.
Amicapsil acts by supporting the immune system and the commensals, i.e. the microbes that are supposed to be present on our skin, in removing damaged tissue and in supporting the formation of new tissue. It also support the immune system in reestablishing a diverse and balanced microbial population, which helps the body in fighting and removing infection.
Controlling the infection means less pain, effective healing and higher quality scarring, because it is infection that typically results low-quality healing and scarring.
